Away from the beachfronts Devon is a colourful patchwork of beautiful countryside and tranquil river valleys. There are many lovely small towns with interesting individual shops, local crafts and markets and proudly preserved architecture. Nestling into lush green valleys you will find idyllic villages where many of the cottages and sometimes even the pub are thatched.

It is well worth taking some time out to visit one of the Moors. Both Dartmoor and Exmoor are the natural habitat of much wildlife and of course moor ponies are to be seen grazing freely.

Dartmoor is a vast expanse of green broken by rocky tors, where relics of the bronze age as well as stone circles and settlement sites can still be seen. Exmoor, the smallest National Park, offers some of the most spectacular coastal scenery in the Country and of course there are many sea birds to be observed as well as herds of red deer.

"Clowted crayme and nawe crayme put together, is eaten more for a sensuall apptyte than for any good nouryshment"
Andrew Boorde, dietitian 1542.

Enjoy!

DEVONSHIRE CLOTTED CREAM

Delicious cream has been produced commercially in the West Country since the 13th Century but for even longer, the housewives of the region have been producing their own at home. Here's a recipe you might like to try:

1. Pour one pint of creamy milk into a heavy based saucepan, cover and leave in a cool place for between 12 hours in Summer and 24 hours in Winter.
2. Heat gently without boiling for 45 minutes. A solid ring of clotted cream will form around the edge of the pan.
3. Leave to cool and then skim the cream from the pan with a slotted spoon.
